It used to be if you wanted a strong but good looking crown a dentist would have only one option: A porcelain fused to metal crown. Now dentists have more esthetic crowns to choose from. A number of strong and metal free crowns are good choices for posterior crowns. Procera crowns, made by Nobel Biocare, have a long clinical track record and I have used them for over ten years. Currently for most of my posterior crowns that are tooth colored, I a have been using Lava crowns by 3M. These are quite beautiful, fit really well and are quite strong. They are a good choice for most posterior teeth. They do not have to be placed more than .5 mm below the gum since there is no metal collar to hide. Accordingly, they never will have that tell tale grey line near the gums that ceramometal crowns can develop
